The Community Letter in Support of the P5 Report

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you very much for signing the “Community Letter” addressed to Energy Secretary Moniz and NSF Director Cordova to express your support for the P5 report “Building for Discovery: Strategic Plan for the U.S. Particle Physics in the Global Context.”  Just in the first week of the signature drive, back in June, the letter garnered 2095 signatures. At that point, we sent the letter with the list of signatories and their affiliations to Secretary Moniz and Director Cordova, with copies to the Director of the DOE Office of Science, the Associate Director of Office of High Energy Physics, and the Assistant Director, NSF Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and DOE/NSF HEP program managers.  The final count of the signatories to the Community Letter was 2,331.  The letter along with the list of signatories and their affiliations is now posted at the DPF web site:

Final Signatories List

Going forward, the letter with the full set of 2,331 signatures is now being used to show community wide support in the context of individual congressional visits by many of you.

We are also delighted to let you know that we recently received letters from the Office of the Director at the DOE Office of Science (DOE SC), and the Assistant Director, NSF Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences thanking the over two thousand signatory members of the U.S. Particle Physics community for expressing support for the strategic objectives outlined in the P5 report.

Dr. Patricia Dehmer writes,
“Thank you, the other members of the HEP Community P5 Rollout Organizing Committee and the over two thousand signatory members of the particle physics community, for expressing your support for the strategic objectives expressed in Building for Discovery: Strategic Plan for U.S. Particle Physics in the Global Context.  The P5 report, as endorsed unanimously by the High energy Physics Advisory Panel, presents a ten year strategic plan for U.S. Particle Physics in the context of a twenty year global vision for the field.  The community’s endorsement of this plan is absolutely critical for its success.
As we plan for the future, the P5 report recommendations and the strong community support for them are forefront in our considerations.”

Dr. Fleming Crim writes,
“”I appreciate hearing the voice of the particle physics community in the P5 Rollout Campaign. The support of the more than 2,000 members of the community who signed the letter is a strong and broad endorsement of the plan. Such community support is a crucial requirement for realization of the vision in the report, and continuing conversations with the community are essential as we move forward. I look forward to the involvement of many stakeholders as the discussions of the report and its implementation continue.”

Thanks again for expressing your support and making the signature drive a success.  We will keep you posted on other community developments/activities in support of the P5 strategic plan.

Best regards,
